Hello,

I am working on a new project and working on the site right now. Without giving too much details about the website, We are working on a community type website.

What I was thinking is making a minisite for the whole site. Let me explain myself.

Before releasing the site and waiting so long before its released, I was wondering if its a good idea to start a mini website and then have a registrations page and also explain the whole website and what it is all about.

We want to spread the site mostly by word of mouth and with offline marketing. So...

is it a good idea to make a mini site and start spreading it.. and saying.. signup now, these are the benefits you'll get for early signups..

I think its a good idea and that way I can get some stats to show if I want funding and so forth (I wont need any though!)

I'd say it might be worth it to create a nice looking landing page with a "Enter your email address here so you can be on the beta list when the site first launches" form. This form can be backed by Google Forms or Wufoo.

I'd also be hesitant to expose the entire concept of the site because you'd lock functionality in the users' minds before they even use it. Definitely give an overview with vague (but not over-vague) wording.

One of my clients is using Prefinery as a beta invitation and management solution. I haven't yet started the integration for it, but it looks pretty interesting and useful.
